Count It All Joy (James 1:2-4)

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." (James 1:2-4) At first hearing, James almost sounds unfeeling. Face trials, and count it "pure joy"? Notice carefully that he is not telling us to rejoice in the suffering itself, nor to pretend that pain does not hurt. He tells us to "consider" it joy, and that word describes a reasoned judgment, a calculation of faith. By faith we can see that God is at work in this trial, doing a good thing our eyes cannot yet see. James pulls back the curtain on the heavenly process. The trial tests our faith. The testing produces perseverance. And when perseverance is allowed to finish its work, it makes us mature and complete, not lacking anything. In other words, God never wastes what we suffer. Just as weights in the gym make a muscle stronger, the burdens of life become, in the hands of God, tools that shape us and bring us to maturity. This does not mean the suffering itself is good, nor that we should go looking for pain. It means that when hardship comes, you have not fallen into meaningless darkness. The Good Shepherd is using this rough stretch of road to lead you into deeper trust and stronger character. The very thing you would remove might be the thing God is using to complete you. Think of how a gardener prunes a vine. The cutting looks like loss, even like harm, yet it is done by a skilled and loving hand so that the branch will bear more fruit. Your trials, painful as they are, are not random slashes. They are the careful work of a Father who is growing something in you that comfort alone never could. If you are in the middle of a trial today, try looking at it with different eyes. Instead of asking only, "Why has God allowed this?" also ask, "Lord, what are You forming in me through this?" That question turns despair into hope, because it assumes the loving purpose of a God who is always at work. Prayer: Lord, in this trial give me the eyes of faith to see the good work You are doing, and grant me perseverance to the end. In Jesus' name, Amen.
