Your Word Is a Lamp (Psalm 119:105)
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalm 119:105)
Notice the size of this lamp. The psalmist does not say that God's word is a floodlight sweeping across the whole valley, showing him ten miles of road at a glance. He says it is a lamp for his feet, the small handheld oil lamp of the ancient world, bright enough to light just the next step.
This is so often how God guides us. We long to see the blueprint of the next five years, but God tends to give us only enough light for the next step. This is not because God is stingy. It is because He wants us to walk by faith, following Him closely, one step at a time. The lamp is not on a distant hilltop. It is at your feet, which means that if you want the light, you must stay close to God's word and be willing to move.
So much of the time we stall because we demand that God light up the entire road before we will take a single step. But God says: take this step first, and the light will be enough. When you reach the next step, the light for that one will be enough too. God's word is not a map handed to you all at once. It is a faithful companion who walks with you, step for step, lighting each stretch of the path as you come to it.
There is a mercy hidden in this. If God showed us the whole road, we might grow proud of our own foresight, or we might faint at the sight of the hills still to climb. By giving us light for one step, He keeps us walking with our hand in His. He teaches us to trust not a plan but a Person.
Today you may be standing at an unclear crossroads. Do not stand in the dark waiting for the whole path to light up. Open God's word, take this one step of obedience, and you will find that the light is exactly enough. Then take the next.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that Your word is a lamp for my feet. When I cannot understand the road ahead, give me light for the next step and the courage to take it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
