I Am the Good Shepherd (John 10:11)

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11) When Jesus calls Himself the good shepherd, He paints one of the most comforting pictures in all of Scripture. In the world of the Bible, a shepherd stayed with his flock day and night. He led the sheep to green pastures and quiet waters. He went searching for the one that wandered off. He used his rod and staff to guard the flock from wild beasts. When Jesus says, "I am the good shepherd," He is speaking to every sheep that feels lost, weary, and helpless, and saying: I know you, and I am watching over you. But notice how Jesus defines the word "good." A good shepherd is not merely capable and dutiful. The good shepherd "lays down his life for the sheep." When the wolf attacks, the hired hand runs away, because the sheep are not his own. Only the true shepherd stands his ground, even at the cost of his own life. This is exactly what Jesus did for us. On the cross, He laid down His life for His sheep. His love is not spoken in words alone. It is a bleeding, self-giving love that held nothing back. What does this mean for you? It means that in this world you are not an unclaimed, orphaned sheep. The Lord who made the universe has personally become your shepherd. He knows your name, He counts your sorrows, and He has already proven with His own life that He loves you to the very end. When you wander off, He comes searching for you. When you are weary, He leads you beside quiet waters. When you are weak, He gathers you up in His arms and carries you close to His heart. Sheep are not strong animals. They are prone to wander, easily frightened, and helpless against predators. If our safety depended on our own strength or sense of direction, we would be lost. But the promise of this verse is that our security does not rest on the strength of the sheep. It rests on the goodness of the Shepherd. He is skilled, He is watchful, and He is willing to die rather than lose one of His own. Wherever you find yourself today, listen for His voice. He is not a distant owner but a present, personal Shepherd who has already given everything for you. Prayer: Lord Jesus, my good Shepherd, thank You for laying down Your life for me.
