The God of All Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) When Paul wrote these words, he was under enormous pressure. Notice what he does not say. He does not promise that God will remove every hardship. Instead he declares that God comforts us in the middle of our troubles. One of God's own names is "the God of all comfort." Not occasional comfort. Not comfort with conditions attached. All comfort, enough to meet every kind of sorrow, fear, and weariness you are carrying today. Watch the direction this comfort flows. God comforts us not merely so that we will feel better, but so that we can become comforters ourselves. The tears you cry today become the tissue you will one day hand to someone else who is weeping. The promise you cling to in the dark becomes the lamp you light for another traveler. God never wastes our pain. He refines it into compassion. If you are in the middle of trouble right now, do not imagine that God is far away. He is bending close to you, the way a tender father cradles a hurting child. And ask Him to bring to mind someone who is suffering at this very moment. A short message, a phone call, a whispered prayer, any of these can become the very comfort God gives through you. There is a particular sweetness in being comforted by someone who has walked the same road. A person who has never grieved can offer sympathy, but a person who has grieved and been carried by God can offer hope with the weight of experience behind it. This is why God so often lets our comfort come wrapped in the memory of our own healed wounds. Nothing you have suffered is wasted in His hands; He gathers up every tear and turns it into something He can give away through you. The deepest comfort is not the removal of the storm but the presence of the One who walks with us through it. God is near. He is enough. And the comfort you receive was never meant to stop with you.
