John the Apostle: The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved

Among all the apostles, there is one who is often called 「the disciple whom Jesus loved」. He was not the most eloquent, nor the first to be remembered, yet again and again in the Gospels he is found close beside the Lord. This is John the apostle—a fisherman from the shores of Galilee who grew into a tender elder of the church in his later years, honored by later generations as 「the apostle of love」. A Fisherman on the Shores of Galilee John was the son of Zebedee and the brother of James, working alongside his father as a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. When Jesus walked along the shore and called them, they immediately left the boat, said farewell to their father, and followed the Lord. In that moment, the life of an ordinary fisherman was utterly rewritten by an eternal calling. He and his brother James were fiery in temperament, and the Lord gave them the name 「Boanerges, which means the sons of thunder」. This young man, who once wanted to command fire to come down from heaven, would one day become the gentlest herald of love—this is the shaping work of grace upon a single life. One of the Inner Three Among the twelve apostles, Peter, James, and John formed the closest 「inner three」. In the room where Jairus' daughter was raised, in the glory of the Mount of Transfiguration, and in the prayers of Gethsemane, John was present. The Lord opened His most private and deepest moments to these three. The Disciple Who Leaned on Jesus' Bosom At the Last Supper, John leaned close against Jesus' bosom, and even quietly asked the Lord on Peter's behalf who it was that would betray Him. This closeness was not a privilege but the response given to a heart that longed to draw near to the Lord. 「Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.John 13:23 (KJV)」 The Charge at the Foot of the Cross When the other disciples scattered and fled, John stood at the foot of the cross, staying with the Lord through His final steps. In that hour of deepest anguish, Jesus entrusted His own mother, Mary, into John's care. 「When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.John 19:26-27 (KJV)」 Author of a Gospel and Letters Through John's pen, the Holy Spirit left us the Gospel of John and the letters of First, Second, and Third John. His words are plain yet profound, telling again and again the truth that 「God is love」. He never tired of urging believers to love one another, for he had seen with his own eyes and touched with his own hands the life of the Word made flesh. 「And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.1 John 4:16 (KJV)」 The Revelation on the Island of Patmos In his old age, John was exiled to the island of Patmos for preaching the gospel. Yet in that desolate place of banishment, he saw heaven opened and received the Book of Revelation, the final book of the whole Bible. The lonely island did not imprison him; instead it became his window for gazing upon the return of the glorified Christ. The Apostle of Love Tradition tells that when John was very old, he would repeat only one sentence at every gathering: 「Little children, love one another.」 From a son of thunder to the apostle of love, John bore witness with his whole life: whoever truly knows the Lord will be melted by His love, and will surely pour out that same love.
