Come to Me, All Who Are Weary (Matthew 11:28-30)

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). Of all the invitations Jesus gives, this one is the gentlest. He does not say, “Come to me, all who are strong, successful, and qualified.” He says, “all you who are weary and burdened” — the very ones who are already worn out and can carry no more. Notice that Jesus does not say, “Just put your burden down.” He says, “Take my yoke upon you.” A yoke is the wooden frame set on the shoulders of oxen so they can pull together. Jesus is not asking you to do nothing from now on; He is asking you to exchange one yoke for another — to stop dragging your own heavy yoke alone, the one that has rubbed you raw, and instead be yoked to Him, so that He pulls alongside you. When Jesus shares the yoke, the weight of the load falls on Him. Why is His yoke easy? Because “I am gentle and humble in heart.” The one you are trusting is not a harsh, demanding master quick to scold, but a Lord who is gentle and lowly, willing to stoop to your weakness. Walking with a Master like this, learning from Him, your soul finds a rest the world cannot give — not the rest of having nothing to do, but the rest of no longer carrying it alone. Today, if you feel worn to the bone, hear this invitation spoken directly to you: come to me. You do not need to get yourself together first, and you do not need to set your burden down before you are worthy to come. Bring your weariness as it is, your burden, your struggle, and come to Him. Trade your yoke for His, and let Him walk with you. The rest He promises reaches the deepest part of your soul. Lord Jesus, I am weary and burdened, and I come to You as You invited me. Let me be yoked to You, learning Your gentle and humble heart, and give my soul Your rest. Amen.
