What Does the Bible Say About Worry?

2026-07-11

I constantly worry about the future. What does the Bible teach about worry, and how can I overcome it?

Worry is like a rocking chair: it keeps you moving but gets you nowhere. It steals the strength of today to pay a bill that tomorrow may never send. Jesus understood this struggle deeply, and in the Sermon on the Mount He speaks the most tender words to heal us of it. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus says "do not worry" three times. He is not denying that life has real needs. He is lifting our eyes from the need to the Provider. He says, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap... and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" Worry often hides a lie: that everything depends on me. Faith declares the truth: the Father is in control. Jesus concludes in verse 34, "Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." We are given grace for today, not for an imagined future we try to live in ahead of time. Luke 12:22-31 records the same teaching and adds a precious promise: "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom." God does not provide grudgingly; He gives gladly. The One who clothes the grass of the field will surely clothe you. So how do we overcome worry? Philippians 4:6-7 shows the way out: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Worry is an inward monologue; prayer is an upward conversation. When we stop rehearsing our fears to ourselves and start pouring them out to God, peace comes to stand guard over our hearts. Psalm 37:5 counsels us, "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this." And 1 Peter 5:7 says, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." Notice how often Scripture returns to this: God cares. Worry whispers that you are alone with your problems; the Word answers that you never are. Today, try writing down every single thing you are worried about, and hand each one to the Lord, thanking Him that He has never once abandoned you.
