Why did Jesus have to die on the cross?

This is a question that touches the very heart of the gospel. At first glance the cross looks like a tragedy, even a defeat. But the Bible tells us it was God's plan to redeem humanity from all eternity, the place where love and justice meet. First, Jesus' death solved the real problem of sin. The Bible says sin is not a small matter. It separates us from a holy God, and its cost is death (Romans 6:23). God is loving, but He is also just, and He cannot simply ignore sin the way an irresponsible judge might. So how can God remain just and yet forgive sinners? The answer is found at the cross: Jesus bore the punishment that we deserved. Isaiah 53:5-6 foretold it long before: "But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities... and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all." This is called substitution, the innocent one taking the place of the guilty. So the cross is not God's failure but God's love. John 3:16 says God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Romans 5:8 says, "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." He did not forgive reluctantly; He personally paid the cost of forgiveness. Why did it have to be such a painful way? Because the cost of sin truly is death, and God chose to let that cost fall on His own Son rather than on us. 1 Peter 2:24 says, "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree." The cross shows us how serious sin is, and at the same time how deep God's love is. What did the cross accomplish? It brought us the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 2:13-14), reconciled us to God (Romans 5:10), and set us free from the power of death and sin. Just before He died, Jesus said one word: "It is finished" (John 19:30). It means the work of salvation was fully accomplished, needing nothing added to it. All of this was confirmed three days later by His resurrection. The cross was not the end; the resurrection proved that His sacrifice was accepted by God and truly effective.
