Where Is God When We Suffer?

This is faith's most honest question, and the Bible never dodges it. First, Scripture never promises believers exemption from suffering. Job suffered innocently; Jesus Himself was "a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief." God does not stand outside pain — the cross is proof that God entered the deepest human suffering. Second, God is with us in it. "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me" (Psalm 23:4). The psalmist does not say the valley disappears — he says there is a Companion in it. Third, God can use suffering. Romans 8:28 says all things work together for good for those who love God — not that all things are good, but that no tear is wasted. Joseph told his brothers: "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good." Finally, suffering has an end. Revelation promises God will wipe away every tear. If you are in the valley now, you need not pretend to be strong. Tell God the real pain — half the Psalms are laments — and tell a trusted believer at church. You were never meant to carry it alone.
