Can Christians Celebrate Lunar New Year and Traditional Festivals

Two things are true at once here, and most arguments about it collapse one into the other. Custom and worship are not the same. A great deal of what happens at Lunar New Year is family and culture: the reunion meal, cleaning the house, new clothes, red envelopes for children, visiting relatives, wishing people well. None of that is an act of worship, and abandoning it does not make anyone more faithful; it usually just makes them absent. A smaller number of customs are religious acts: offerings made to deities or ancestors, incense burned as petition, divination for the year ahead. Those are directed somewhere other than God, and that is where the line falls. The origins argument proves less than people assume. Almost every practice in every culture has roots somewhere, and the New Testament deals with a version of this directly. Paul discusses food that had been offered to idols and concludes that an idol is nothing, so the food itself is not contaminated, while telling believers to abstain where it would confuse or wound someone else. Meaning now matters more than origin then. Practical guidance: go, because the reunion meal is the point of the festival for most families and your absence will be read as rejecting them. Decide in advance which specific acts you will not do, and say so calmly beforehand. Contribute something: cook, pay, drive, arrive early. And do not lecture relatives on the origins of their customs. Many Chinese Christian families also add something of their own, such as a prayer before the reunion meal, which over years changes the shape of a family gathering far more effectively than staying away.
