Can Christians Drink Alcohol

Scripture does not forbid alcohol, and it does forbid drunkenness. Both halves have to be held. Wine appears throughout the Bible as an ordinary part of meals and celebration. Jesus made it at a wedding and used it at the Last Supper, and Paul told Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach. A blanket rule that alcohol is sinful cannot be got from the text without ignoring a great deal of it. At the same time drunkenness is condemned repeatedly and without qualification, and leaders are specifically warned against being given to much wine. So how do you decide? Three questions from Paul settle most cases. One, does it master you? If you cannot stop, the question is already answered. Two, does it damage someone weaker? If a person near you is fighting alcoholism, your freedom is not worth their fall. Three, can you do it with a clear conscience? If you cannot, then for you it is wrong, even where it is permitted for another. Why do churches differ? Congregations in places where alcohol has devastated families often abstain entirely, and that is wisdom for their situation rather than a claim that the Bible forbids it. Respect the practice of the church you are among. One thing is not a matter of freedom: driving, working, or caring for children after drinking. That is not a conscience question but a safety one.
