Solomon: The King Who Asked God for Wisdom, and the Warning of His Later Years

Among all the kings of Israel, Solomon shines the brightest. He was the son of King David, still young when he came to the throne, facing a nation that was flourishing yet full of challenges. It was at this very beginning that God appeared to him in the night and asked a question that would shape the rest of his life: “Ask what I shall give thee.” Solomon’s answer still speaks to everyone who seeks God today: true riches begin with a humble heart. He Did Not Ask for Wealth, Only for a Listening Heart At that time Solomon saw himself as a child who did not know how to go out or come in to govern so great a nation. He did not ask for long life, or riches, or the lives of his enemies. Instead he asked for the one thing people so often overlook—wisdom. 「Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?1 Kings 3:9 (KJV)」 This request pleased God. He gave Solomon not only a wise and understanding heart, but also the honor and riches he had never asked for. This shows us something: when we first seek what God treasures, He often provides even the things we never spoke aloud. A Wise Judgment Between Two Mothers Soon Solomon’s wisdom was revealed in a difficult case. Two women were fighting over a living child, each claiming him as her own, with no proof either way. Solomon ordered the child cut in two, one half for each. The true mother would rather give the child up to the other woman than see him killed; the imposter said to go ahead and divide him. In an instant it was clear whose child he was. When all Israel heard this judgment, they stood in awe of the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice. Building the Temple for the LORD The greatest work of Solomon’s life was building the temple for God—something his father David had longed to do in his heart but was not permitted to carry out. Solomon spent seven years, pouring out vast amounts of gold, silver, cedar, and fine craftsmanship, to raise a glorious temple. In his prayer of dedication, he humbly confessed that even the heaven of heavens cannot contain God, how much less this house? What he built was not to confine God, but to give the people a place to come before Him, where their prayers would be heard. Riches Beyond Measure and the Visit of the Queen of Sheba The wisdom God gave also brought unprecedented prosperity. Solomon’s fame spread among the nations, and even the Queen of Sheba came from far away to test him with hard questions. When she saw Solomon’s wisdom, his palace, his provisions, and the order of his worship, there was no more spirit left in her. She said it all far exceeded the report she had heard, and she praised the LORD who had set Solomon on the throne. People from every nation came to seek him out, longing to hear the wise words God had given him. Proverbs: Leaving Wisdom for Those Who Follow Solomon’s wisdom was not used only to govern; it also took the form of words, preserved in the book of Proverbs, becoming a guide for generation after generation in managing life, family, and conduct. The key to this book is actually made plain at its very opening. 「The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.Proverbs 1:7 (KJV)」 In other words, the source of all true wisdom is the fear of God. Apart from this foundation, even the greatest cleverness will go astray. And these very words became the portrait—and the warning—of Solomon’s own life. Drifting in His Old Age: The Fall of the Wisest King Painfully, the same Solomon who wrote Proverbs did not, in his later years, keep what he himself had written. He married many foreign wives, and to please them he went so far as to follow other gods, building high places for idols in Jerusalem. 「For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.1 Kings 11:4 (KJV)」 This reminds us: spiritual falling often comes not at the start but near the end; not from a lack of wisdom, but from a heart that slowly drifts away. Having a gift is not the same as keeping one’s relationship with God. The Lessons of His Life for Us Solomon’s story is both a peak of grace and a loving alarm bell. It tells us that asking God for wisdom is always right, but what matters even more is to hold on to a heart that fears God for a lifetime, keeping wisdom forever in submission to God rather than letting it replace Him.
