Isaiah: Seeing the Lord's Glory and Saying 「Here am I; send me」

Among all the prophets, Isaiah is often called the 「gospel prophet」. His ministry spanned the reigns of four kings of Judah, and he both announced God's judgment against sin and proclaimed God's comfort to the people. More astonishing still, more than seven hundred years before Jesus was born, Isaiah had already drawn a clear and unmistakable portrait of the coming Messiah. His book reads almost like a gospel written in advance. The Vision in the Temple: Seeing the Lord's Glory Isaiah's calling began with a vision that would mark him for life. 'In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.' The seraphim cried out to one another, 'Holy, holy, holy!' The moment Isaiah beheld God's holiness, he saw his own uncleanness and cried, 'Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips.' Everyone who truly meets God first sees his own unworthiness. 「Here am I; send me」 God did not abandon the trembling Isaiah. Instead He sent a seraph to touch his lips with a live coal from the altar, declaring that his iniquity was taken away and his sin purged. Only the one who has been cleansed can be sent. When God's call came, Isaiah answered with words of surrender that have echoed down the ages. 「Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.Isaiah 6:8 (KJV)」 Proclaiming Judgment: Because God Is Holy The message Isaiah was sent to preach was not, at first, a welcome one. He exposed a people who looked devout on the outside yet were rebellious within, turning worship into empty ritual. Through him God called the people to forsake their sin and return to righteousness: 'Come now, and let us reason together... though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.' Behind the words of judgment stood a God who longed, more than anything, for His people to turn back to Him. Proclaiming Comfort: God Himself Will Save From chapter forty onward, Isaiah's tone turns to comfort rich with hope. 'Comfort ye, comfort ye my people.' God promised to open a highway through the wilderness and to gather His people like a shepherd carrying the lambs; He who numbers the stars and measures the seas also tends to every weary and discouraged soul: 'But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength.' Judgment and comfort flow from one and the same faithful God. The Messianic Prophecies: A Virgin Shall Conceive, a Child Is Born What is most breathtaking about Isaiah is his prophecy of the Savior. He declared, 'Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel' (Immanuel means 'God with us'); and he foretold that the coming child would bear the government of the whole world upon His shoulders. These very words were fulfilled in the Jesus who was born in Bethlehem. 「For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)」 The Suffering Servant: Isaiah 53 In all the Old Testament, no passage foretells the cross of Christ more clearly than Isaiah 53. The 「suffering servant」 is despised and rejected, bearing the punishment for the sins of others, led like a lamb to the slaughter yet opening not his mouth. To read this chapter is to stand at the foot of the cross on Calvary. 「But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)」 What the Gospel Prophet Says to Us Today Isaiah's whole life bore witness to a God who is both holy and loving: He judges sin, yet He prepares salvation; He sends His prophets, and in the end He sends His own beloved Son.
