Seek First the Kingdom (Matthew 6:33)

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:33) Just before Jesus spoke these words, He had been teaching His disciples not to worry about what they would eat, drink, or wear. He pointed to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field and said, in effect: if your heavenly Father feeds them and clothes them, how much more will He care for you? Then He gave a command that reorders everything: "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness." Notice the word "first." Jesus is not saying that our physical needs do not matter. He plainly says "all these things will be given to you as well." He is rearranging the priorities of our lives. Our natural tendency is to put food, clothing, and security in first place, and to fit God in whenever we have energy left over. But Jesus turns the order around. Put God and His kingdom at the center first, and everything else will be supplied by a faithful Father. So what does it look like to seek God's kingdom first in ordinary life? It means beginning the day by seeking God's face before reaching for the phone. It means asking, when we make decisions, "What would honor God and build His kingdom?" before we ask, "What is best for me?" It means, when anxiety climbs into our hearts, placing the promises of God above our worries. This is not a formula for bargaining blessings out of God. It is an invitation to freedom. When God is in His rightful place, worry loses its foothold. You do not have to carry the crushing weight of providing your whole world, because the One who provides for you is the same Father who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies. Worry has a way of shrinking our world down to the size of our fears. Seeking the kingdom first expands it again to the size of God's faithfulness. The question that drives an anxious heart is, "How will I manage?" The question that drives a trusting heart is, "How can I honor God today?" And Jesus promises that the God we seek first will not forget the things we set aside to seek Him. Seek Him first this morning, and watch how the rest of the day is reordered around that one decision. Prayer: Father, help me to seek Your kingdom and righteousness first today. I hand my worries to You and trust You to provide all I need. In Jesus' name, Amen.
