His Mercies Are New Every Morning (Lamentations 3:22-23)
“Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). These words appear in one of the saddest books in the Bible. Jeremiah watched with his own eyes as Jerusalem fell, the temple was destroyed, and the people were carried into exile. The whole book is soaked in tears. And yet, in the very middle of the rubble, the prophet lifts his head and says something that changes everything: the Lord's love never fails.
Notice the setting of these words. They were not spoken when all was well and life was calm, but in the deepest darkness. Faith often shines brightest not on the mountaintop but in the valley, where a person can still declare, “his compassions never fail.” Jeremiah does not pretend the pain is not there; he simply refuses to let the pain have the last word about God.
“They are new every morning.” How tender that phrase is. Yesterday you may have used up all your strength, made your mistakes, cried out all your tears. But God's compassion is not a fixed supply that runs out; it is like the manna that fell each dawn — fresh, timely, exactly enough. You do not have to draw on today's grace while dragging yesterday's debts behind you. This morning's mercy is brand new. God's faithfulness is “great” precisely because it renews itself day by day, never late and never short.
Today, however yesterday went, hear this promise: God's love has already been made ready for you again this morning. You can hand Him yesterday's failure and receive today's fresh mercy. His faithfulness does not depend on your performance but on His own unchanging nature. The sun rises faithfully every day, and so does God's love — new every morning, for you. This means you are never trapped by how yesterday ended. Whatever was spent, whatever was broken, whatever went unfinished, the dawn brings a fresh measure of grace that was not there the night before. You do not have to earn it or manufacture it; you only have to receive it, the way you receive the morning light through the window.
Lord, thank You that Your love never fails and Your mercies are new every morning. I hand You everything from yesterday and receive the new mercy You have prepared for me today. Great is Your faithfulness. Amen.
