I Am the Bread of Life (John 6:35)
"Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.'" (John 6:35)
Just before Jesus spoke these words, He had fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. The crowd was amazed by the miracle, and the next day they came looking for Him again, hoping for another meal of bread. But Jesus lifted their eyes from food that spoils to the bread that endures to eternal life, which is Himself.
Consider the title "the bread of life." Bread is the most basic and everyday of foods, the staple that sustains life. When Jesus uses this ordinary thing to describe Himself, He is saying: I am not a decoration on your life, not an optional extra you can take or leave. I am the very food your soul depends on to live. A person without bread will starve, and a soul without Christ will wither at its deepest core.
Notice the two promises Jesus makes: "Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." This is a continuing invitation. It is not enough to come once and believe once, as though the matter were settled forever with a single meal. It is coming to Him day after day, living on Him as our daily bread. Just as our bodies need to eat every day, our souls need to feed on Christ every day. Nothing in this world can truly fill the space in our hearts that was made for God. Only Jesus Himself can.
Think about the difference between being fed and being satisfied. The crowd wanted their stomachs filled, and Jesus was willing to feed them, but He wanted to give them something far greater. Full stomachs empty again by evening. The bread Jesus offers reaches a deeper hunger, the ache in us that no achievement, relationship, or possession has ever managed to satisfy for long. He offers not merely to help us but to be our very sustenance.
Whatever emptiness or hunger you carry in your heart today, you can bring it to Jesus. He does not turn hungry people away empty-handed. He is not a distant provider of bread but the Bread Himself, given for you, inviting you to come and be filled.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the bread of life. Only You can satisfy the deep hunger of my soul. Be the food of my soul today, and teach me to come to You each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
