John the Baptist: The Voice in the Wilderness Who Prepared the Way

At the opening of the four Gospels, one figure appears in the wilderness ahead of the Savior. Clothed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, eating locusts and wild honey, he stirred all of Judea. He was John the Baptist — the forerunner who prepared the way for the Lord. He was not the Light, but came to bear witness to the Light. He did not seek to make himself known, but only sought to point people to the Christ who was to come. A Child Born of Promise John's father, Zacharias, was a priest, and his mother, Elisabeth, was well along in years and had remained childless. As Zacharias burned incense in the temple, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and announced the birth of this extraordinary child. From his mother's womb the child would be filled with the Holy Spirit, and he would turn many of the children of Israel back to the Lord. His very birth was a sign of God's faithfulness — what seemed impossible to men, God would surely accomplish. The Cry in the Wilderness When John had grown, the word of God came to him, and he went out to preach in the wilderness of Judea. Not amid the splendor of the temple, nor in the finery of a royal palace, but in a desolate place he lifted up his voice. His message was simple and powerful: the kingdom of heaven is at hand; repent. The people came out from Jerusalem and all the region around the Jordan, confessing their sins and being baptized by him. 「The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.Matthew 3:3 (KJV)」 Preparing the Way of the Lord John's mission was to be the voice crying in the wilderness that the prophet Isaiah had foretold. He was to make the crooked paths straight and fill in every valley, so that hearts would be made ready for the coming of the Savior. True preparation is not an outward ritual but an inward repentance — confessing our weakness, turning away from sin, and turning to the Lord who gives grace. Behold, the Lamb of God When Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John, John felt unworthy and said that he had need to be baptized by Jesus instead. Yet to fulfill all righteousness, Jesus was baptized. Suddenly the heavens were opened, the Spirit descended like a dove, and a voice from heaven declared that this was His beloved Son. The next day, when John saw Jesus coming toward him, he pointed to Him and spoke the testimony that has echoed through the ages. 「Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.John 1:29 (KJV)」 He Must Increase, I Must Decrease When his disciples grew troubled that the crowds were turning to follow Jesus, John's reply revealed the finest quality of his life. He knew he was only the friend of the bridegroom, and his joy came from hearing the bridegroom's voice. He never grasped at the glory that belonged to Christ, nor clung to his own reputation. 「He must increase, but I must decrease.John 3:30 (KJV)」 These few short words express the heart that every servant of the Lord ought to have. Letting Christ take first place and stepping back into the shadows is the deepest humility of the forerunner, and also his truest glory. Martyred for the Truth John preached faithfully and never feared those in power. He openly rebuked King Herod for the sin of taking his brother's wife, and for this he was thrown into prison. Later, at a birthday banquet, because of a rash oath, Herod ordered John beheaded. This forerunner bore final witness with his own blood to the truth he had proclaimed. Yet Jesus praised him, saying that among those born of women there had not risen a greater than John the Baptist. The Spirit of the Forerunner Today The life of John the Baptist reminds us that true greatness lies not in being exalted ourselves, but in preparing hearts for Christ. We may not have a wilderness for a stage, yet we are called just the same to point to the Lamb of God, declaring with our lives that he must increase, and we must decrease.
