The Lord Is Near to All Who Call on Him (Psalm 145:18)
“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth” (Psalm 145:18). In this psalm of praise, David paints a picture of a God who is not far off. He is not a deity enthroned in heaven and indifferent to those below. He is “near” — not near only to the perfect or the successful, but near to everyone who calls on Him.
Notice that there is no threshold here. The verse does not say, “He is near to the eloquent, the ones who pray beautifully, the ones with strong faith.” It says, “to all who call on him.” Even if your prayer is only a sigh, a whispered “Lord, help me,” a moment when no words come and only tears flow — as long as it rises sincerely from your heart, God has already drawn near. He is not concerned with the skill of your prayer but with the honesty of your heart.
Those two words, “in truth,” matter. The heart God draws near to is the honest heart — not a flawless one, but one that has stopped pretending and is willing to lay the truth bare before Him. You can call on Him carrying your doubts, your anger, your weakness. An honest prayer is always more welcome to Him than a polished one. When you cry out in truth, you are not shouting to a distant God; you are whispering to a Father who has already bent down close.
Today you may feel God is far away, as though your prayers only hit the ceiling and bounce back. This verse invites you to believe a fact that runs deeper than the feeling: the moment you call, He is right beside you. He does not wait until your prayer is “good enough” to come, nor until you have solved the problem first. Right now, call on His name in truth, and He is near.
Lord, I call on You in truth right now. I do not ask for fine words, only that You would be near to me. Thank You for promising to draw close to everyone who sincerely calls on You. Let me truly sense Your presence today. Amen.
