Those Who Wait on the Lord Will Renew Their Strength (Isaiah 40:31)

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31). This verse is often printed on inspirational images, but its real weight comes from the lines just before it. Isaiah first says, “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall.” Human strength, however great, will run out one day. And then God gives His promise: those who wait on Him will renew their strength. Everything turns on that word wait. Here “wait” is not sitting idle, passively killing time. The original carries the sense of hoping, looking up, twisting strands together like a rope — a trust that ties your whole life back onto God. When we stop straining with our own nearly-snapped strength and instead turn to God and look to Him, He pours His strength into us. This strength is not something we squeeze out of ourselves; it is something we receive from Him. Notice the three levels in the promise: soaring like eagles, running without growing weary, walking without fainting. Life is not always a moment of soaring. Much of it is simply walking, day after day — going to work, raising children, caring for family, facing the ordinary. God's promise does not skip over these plain steps. He gives strength not only when you need to mount up with wings, but also when you simply need to keep walking, one foot after another, without fainting. Today, if you feel completely spent, remember this: weariness is not proof that your faith is too small; it is the truth of being human. The answer is not to drive yourself harder, but to return to God and wait on Him. Hand Him your empty cup and let Him fill it again. You do not have to hold out to the end on your own strength. The God who gives power to the faint is waiting to renew you. Lord, I admit my strength is limited and I am worn out. I come to You now and wait on You; renew my strength. Let me soar like an eagle, and let me also walk the ordinary road without growing faint. Amen.
