Sarah: Mother of Nations Who Spent a Lifetime Waiting on God's Promise

Her whole life is almost bound to a single word: waiting. Waiting for a child, waiting for a promise to be fulfilled, waiting for the God who keeps His word. A Woman Who Came Out of Ur Sarah was first named Sarai, the half-sister and the wife of Abraham (Genesis 20:12). That following was itself an act of faith. Long Years of Barrenness Scripture names the deepest ache of Sarah's life early on: 'But Sarai was barren; she had no child.' In an age when children were a blessing and childlessness a disgrace, those few words carried decades of tears and sighing. What is too hard belongs to our side; with God, nothing is too hard. Isaac—The Promise Born in Old Age The LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and did unto her as He had promised. When Abraham was a hundred years old and Sarah ninety, the child she had waited for all her life was finally born. Sarah named him Isaac, which means 'he laughs'—once the quiet laugh of doubt, now the joyful laughter of gladness. 「God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.Genesis 21:6 (KJV)」 Mother of Nations, Strengthened by Faith The New Testament places Sarah among the heroes of faith, saying that 'through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age', because she judged Him faithful who had promised (Hebrews 11:11). God had also told Abraham that Sarah would become a mother of nations, and that kings of peoples would come from her (Genesis 17:16). The woman whose womb had once been empty became, in the end, a fountain of blessing for all peoples. Written for You, Who Are Still Waiting Sarah lived a hundred and twenty-seven years (Genesis 23:1). Her life was not without stumbling, yet through the long wait she learned to trust. She tells us this: God's promise may come very slowly, but it never fails; our faith may be very small, but God's faithfulness never wavers.
