Be Strong and Courageous — Daring to Go Because He Goes With You

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9) Joshua had every reason to fear: Moses was dead and he was the successor; ahead lay the Jordan, Jericho, and the giants of Canaan who had terrified an entire generation forty years earlier. In this one chapter God says "be strong and courageous" three times — evidently Joshua needed it. But look at courage's foundation. God does not say "be strong because you are exceptionally able," but "for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." Biblical courage is never built on self-assessment; it is built on God's presence. One detail is easily missed: the promise of presence is tied to the word — "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night" (v8). Presence is not a vague feeling; it arrives concretely, daily, through His word. What is the Jordan in front of you? Step in, carrying the promise of His presence. Prayer: Lord, something ahead frightens me. Thank You for saying You are with me wherever I go. Make me strong and courageous. Amen.
