The Lord Will Fight for You — Exodus 14:14

"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." (Exodus 14:14) Israel was trapped. Ahead lay the Red Sea, behind them thundered Pharaoh's whole army, and on either side stretched the wilderness. They had only just escaped slavery, and now they seemed to have nowhere to go, so they cried out to Moses in fear. It was in that seemingly hopeless moment that Moses spoke these staggering words: "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." Notice both what God promises and what he asks of Israel. What God promises is this: he himself will fight. The battle was far too big for them to win on their own. They could not part the sea, and they could not hold back the army. And what God asks is that they "be still." This runs almost completely against our nature. Faced with a crisis, our instinct is to scramble, to control, to do something right now. But there are times when the most faith-filled act is not to act, but to grow quiet and hand the battle to God. "Being still" here is not passive resignation; it is active trust. It means letting go of our own frantic striving and fixing our eyes on the God who rules both the Red Sea and Pharaoh. What Israel would do next was simply to move forward as God commanded. It was God who opened the way, and God who won the victory. Their part was to trust and obey, not to save themselves. Today, perhaps you too are caught between your own Red Sea and your own approaching army: a problem you have no power to solve. The word of God comes to you: he will fight for you. This does not mean you do nothing; it means you do not have to carry alone the weight that belongs to God. Hand it to him, and then, with faith, move forward. There is deep rest in learning where your responsibility ends and God's power begins. You were never meant to be your own deliverer. Be still, and watch the Lord do what only he can do. Lord, this battle is too big for me. I place it in your hands. Help me to be still and trust, and to watch you work on my behalf. Amen.
